Groundwater Remediation

Granular activated carbon groundwater remediation for legacy industrial sites contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons, chlorinated solvents, or BTEX, with relocatable skid systems for plume migration.

The Challenge
Legacy industrial sites, closed refineries, dry cleaners, manufacturing plants, fuel storage, leave groundwater contamination that persists for decades. Pump and treat with adsorption is the proven technology for hydrocarbon and solvent contamination at the typical concentration range.
Quick Answer

Groundwater remediation uses granular activated carbon contactor systems to remove petroleum hydrocarbons (BTEX, MTBE, total petroleum hydrocarbons), chlorinated solvents (TCE, PCE), and trace metals from contaminated groundwater at legacy industrial sites. Relocatable skid systems follow the plume migration over multi year remediation programmes.

Legacy Contamination Persists for Decades

Industrial sites that operated through the 20th century left widespread groundwater contamination: petroleum hydrocarbons from refineries and fuel storage, chlorinated solvents from dry cleaners and metal degreasing operations, BTEX from gasoline spills, MTBE from oxygenated fuel programmes, and trace heavy metals from manufacturing. Pump and treat with adsorption remediation is the proven, scalable, regulator approved technology at the typical concentration range.

GAC Contactor Configuration

The SorbiTech remediation system uses GAC 1240 in a fixed bed contactor downstream of the recovery wells. The contactor is sized for the abstraction rate and the contaminant load. For sites with high inlet concentration, an upstream air stripping stage removes the bulk volatile fraction and reduces the load on the carbon bed. For sites with trace metal contamination, an upstream ion exchange stage removes the metals before the carbon adsorption.

Relocatable Skid Follows the Plume

Groundwater plumes migrate over the multi year remediation programme as the abstraction wells reduce the contaminant inventory. The SorbiTech remediation skid is designed for relocation: skid mounted on a standard container footprint, tie in at quick connect flanges, electrical at standard contractor supply voltage. The system can be moved from one wellfield to another within a remediation programme as the focus shifts.

Rental and Long Term Service

For shorter programmes (1 to 3 years) the SorbiTech rental option avoids the operator capital commitment; for longer programmes (5 to 30 years) the purchased system plus a media reactivation contract gives the lowest lifecycle cost. Sector coverage is industrial water treatment and oil and gas (for refinery and terminal legacy site remediation).

Selection Guidance

GAC in a fixed bed contactor sized for the abstraction rate and the contaminant load. For high concentration sites, add air stripping upstream. For trace heavy metals, add ion exchange. Relocatable skid for plume migration.
