Catalyst bed support and grading uses inert ceramic and high purity alumina spheres in graded sets to support the catalyst or adsorbent bed in fixed bed reactors and adsorbers. The graded sequence (3 mm to 25 mm spheres) holds the active media in place, distributes the inlet flow, prevents fines migration, and resists the thermal and chemical cycles of regeneration.
Graded Bed Support Is Engineering Fundamentals
Every fixed bed catalytic reactor, refinery hydrotreater, hydrocracker, reformer, ammonia converter, methanol synthesis, and every adsorber or contactor vessel needs a graded support bed at the bottom above the outlet collector and a graded cover layer at the top above the active media. The graded sequence holds the catalyst or adsorbent in place during operation, distributes the inlet flow across the bed cross section, prevents fines migration into the downstream piping, and resists the thermal and chemical cycles of regeneration without degradation.
Ceramic Support Balls for Moderate Temperature
SorbiTech Ceramic Support Balls are inert alumina silicate clay spheres fired at high temperature for adsorber and moderate temperature catalyst bed support. Standard sizes range from 3 mm to 25 mm in graded sets matched to the active media size. The graded sequence places larger balls at the very bottom and the very top, with stepped layers of progressively smaller balls between the support and the active media.

Inert Alumina Balls for High Temperature Duty
SorbiTech Inert Alumina Balls are high purity Al₂O₃ spheres (above 92 percent) for high temperature regeneration loops and aggressive chemistry duty. The classical application is the bottom support layer in a refinery hydrotreater or hydrocracker where the regeneration temperature exceeds the limit of the ceramic clay ball. The high alumina content also provides thermal mass in regeneration loops, storing heat during the hot purge and releasing it during the cooling step.
Delivery as Graded Sets
SorbiTech supplies the support media in graded sets matched to the SorbiTech vessel specification, with the certificate of analysis covering ball size, bulk density, crush strength, and alumina purity.
